Twinkly Lights And Domain Fights

Twinkly Lights

Hello, dear readers!

There I was, wrapped in a blanket, sucking a candy cane, warding off my curious cat who likes peppermint almost as much as I do, and feeling like the picture of December coziness. And then the email popped up in my inbox.

Hi Natalie,

We are writing to tell you about an important change to your subscription plan that’s coming soon. As of December 19, 2018, WordPress.com plans will no longer include a free domain credit for renewals.

Your site, the tools, and benefits you get from your plan will remain unchanged. This policy change only impacts your domain registration.

We’re giving you this advance notice, before the change takes place, and also offering you a limited-time chance to renew your plan now (and get your domain free for another year).

This domain credit change will take effect on your next billing date and you will be charged $26 for your domain theamericangirlspot.com and $48 for your Personal plan.

Offer Valid Till December 18, 2018
For a limited time, you can lock in your existing renewal price of $48 for your Personal plan, which includes both a plan and a custom domain name for one more year, instead of paying the additional $26.

If you have any questions, our Happiness Engineers will be happy to assist you.

Thanks,

Bah, humbug!

Now I have to pay upwards of $70 for my site and domain…with only two weeks notice! I’m not impressed, Automattic! Because I’m not about to shell out that much, I’ve made the decision to switch The American Girl Spot to wordpress.org, the free and open source cousin of wordpress.com. That means I have to transfer my domain, set up my new site, and import all my old posts…before December 19th (all with my dad’s help, because I’m pretty inept when it comes to these things). So due to that, expect some turbulence on the blog and fewer posts (who am I kidding, I’m already posting at the bare minimum). After that, I’ve got some plans for Christmas and New Year’s posts, so stay tuned.

Now that I’ve ranted about that, onto pictures of Alex over Thanksgiving break!

For Halloween, I planned to be a Christmas Tree. I actually only ended up wearing my costume to a Halloween party (a terrible experience-I didn’t know middle school girls could be jerkish to the point of stupidity), but I still had the lights, which were perfectly doll sized.

Alex was already all dressed and ready to go, so over Thanksgiving break I popped a beanie I crocheted onto her head and took her outside.

…and proceeded to tangle her up in lights.

She appears to have had quite a festive time, all things considered.

I sometimes feel slightly guilty for highlighting my Jess mold dolls so much, but I just love their sweet, impish faces (maybe just a teeeeeeny bit more than my other dolls). Alexis looks so cute in hoodies or hats, and her short hair is so awesome and sassy.

If you’ve read Alex’s profile on my Meet The Dolls page, you’ll know that she was somewhat based on 5th grade me. Something you might not know is that she was named for several different people, all named Alexandria, Alexis, or Alix.

It’s the most wonderful time of the yeeeeaaaarrrrr….

Speaking of Christmas carols, today I heard my younger siblings rowdily singing Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer-but replacing some of the lyrics with ones I came up with almost seven years ago. I was an oddly violent six year old, apparently, because instead of saving a foggy Christmas eve, Rudolph clobbers Santa and takes over the North Pole. And has an eye patch.

I know you just sang those lyrics in you head, mwahaha.

It ended with ”Then one foggy Christmas eve, Santa came back and said; Rudolph mark my words, one day, I will have your antlered head…”

Don’t ask where I came up with it. I have no idea. It’s best not to pry into the minds of insane second graders.

I leave you with one last picture of Alex so you can forget about Rudolph the One-Eyed Reindeer.

Favorite Christmas carol/parody?

  2. The photos are so beautiful, hmmm…as for your domain perhaps you could do the non-paying thing that WordPress allows you to do, you would have .wordpress.com in your address but you wouldn’t need to start over.

    1. I thought about that, but since I’m almost out of storage anyway, I decided it was more practical to switch. I won’t have to start completely over, thank goodness, I realized I can import my content so all my old posts are there 🙂 Aww, thank you!
